Music-movie-ripping-streaming goodness. Currently I have TVersity on my XP box streaming to my 360. Free is good! But the quality is constantly varying (I expect that from different sources, of course). Podcasts and flash-based webisodes have yet to work as well.

Now Im looking for something more dedicated. More.. flexible? Robust? fun?

My first thought was a NAS server with Twonky installed on it. But that would cost money. I dont have money.

My next idea was to reformat my XP box (I have another XP box waiting for gaming abuse), dump a bunch of spare HDs in it and make an all-purpose Linux server out of it. (Twonky makes a Linux version, too). Heck, I can also make it a firewall and maybe even setup mail/webservers.

Lastly.. I have the most-of the-time-in-box G4 Mac Mini, which I can probably hook up a  extrenal Firewire enclosure, hook it up directly to the TV and be done with it. (Twonky again, maybe Rivet or Connect360) . I can always use more Mac Experience, plus playing in garageband or ProTools is always appealing.

Maybe I’ll just do all of them.. for fun.

What say you fellow geeksters and tinkerers? Is there an option Im missing?

I got to thinking.. Sooner than we realize.. alot of people whose work shaped major changes in this world  (and helped me through my formative years) will be hitting that age barrier soon.  The list is long and the influence wide. My heart sank as I found out that I could never witness Andres Segovia or Miles Davis for myself.

The sadder thing is that there are no real icons in the world to replace them.. No one worthy of the upper echelons of memorable legacy. Are these giants to fall through the fickle trendy cracks of our decaying American culture and into obscurity like the Marx Bros, Clark Gable or George Burns.  Sure people recognize Charlie Chaplins’ face. Do they know who he was? Watched his films? Know why the ending of City Lights is one of the best moments captured on film ever?

Is 2000-2015 to be remembered as the Brittany-Paris Winehouse years? Are there any actors who we can say 20 years from now will be looked at as an influential powerhouse that is worthy of watching and studying the pristine examples of their craft they have left for us?

Where the internet rules and anyone and everyone can upload mediocrity for all to see, how is anyone supposed to stand out and lead the next 20-40 years of insipration?

No matter what the future holds, I’m pretty thankful to have had the opportunity to see (and in some cases meet)  some of the bands and people I admire.

Don’t pass on those opportunities, folks. Take them when you can. See your idols. Go to shows. Heck.. if you’re downloading the music off the internet the least you can do is hit the club when that band/person comes to town. The memories will be worth to you so much more than the $80 you pay for an evening of going out.

I was about 15 when I first spotted Carlin on HBO. Arguing with his Rice Krispies at Carnegie Hall. I instantly became a fan.I was lucky enough to see him 3 times and own just about everything he put out (including the FOX TV show I taped on VHS).

More than ever, this country needs him and his alternate-view comedy. I doubt we’ll ever see his like again because this country is too damn PC to generate another.

Thank you George for the insights, laughs and lots of fart jokes. Now good folks, some George via Youtube.. If you spend the day at work watching George and your boss gives you shit, tell him to go fuck himself.. George would like that.

I like most people, cycle through bands.. but over the past 22 years,  I keep coming back to the dark fab four. Hence, Ive been on the Sab kick the past week or so (knowing full well I should be binding Fat Free into my essence).

Ive heard a bit off the the Rhino remasters’ “Black Box’ set and heard things I’ve never heard before.. mostly Geezers’ kick-ass bass playing and the subtleties in Bill’s drumming. These bits make the songs alot more interesting and dynamic than ever.. dare I say its like listening to these song the first time again.

Even more so, as I skip over “Paranoid”.. lets face it.. I cant stomach some of the more popular songs anymore..  Ive picked up a new appreciation for tunes like “Wicked World”and the blues jams that show the true musicianship behind the band.

Listen to Black Sabbath.. Grand advice.
